I dislike how in the U.S, many universities emphasize a liberal arts curriculum that forces you to take a breadth of classes outside your major. I am currently a math major and I have to take a bunch of humanities/social science classes that I dread every moment thinking about. I envy those students in the U.K, Canada or other countries who can just take classes pertaining to their Degree and not have to worry about other subjects. Having to take social science/humanities classes along with my core and elective math classes divides my attention and makes me put less effort into my math classes. I feel like I would be able to commit more time to math if I didn't have to worry about these other gen eds. I am willing to put all my effort into math classes because I'm so interested in it that I would probably neglect my other subjects and fail those classes like Ramanujan did. I've learned far more and much faster learning math on my own in the summer because I didn't have to worry about other subjects that I disliked learning about.I don't buy into the belief that a liberal arts education should be mandated because "it's essential for you to become well rounded, critical thinker...", or whatever Americans talk so highly about the liberal arts say. I've heard a million arguments about the benefits of a university liberal rats education, and nothing's going to change my mind that I just want to study math and anything math related in university. People even dismiss my opinion and just say that I don't belong in university. via /r/learnmath https://ift.tt/38JGeE4
